Keeping the Temperature Right While Exporting Shrimp from Greenland 18-03-06

Someone has to make sure the large amounts of frozen, chilled and refrigerated cargo in a huge shipping vessel are handled and monitored with maximum care to keep one of Greenland’s most important exports, coldwater shrimp, ready for restaurants and dinner tables across the world.

Remote monitoring is the only good answer in an arctic environment where manual monitoring of refrigerated containers is both difficult and dangerous and sometimes impossible.

That’s why YORK became the best choice for the Royal Arctic Line A/S, Greenland’s principal shipping line with a fleet of modern cargo and container vessels operating between 13 major ports and 58 settlements in Greenland.

No doubt, Royal Arctic has to handle the expensive coldwater shrimp with maximum care. In late 2003, it became the first company to install the new YORK Global Monitoring system – the first solution of its kind in the world, which was introduced earlier in the year. The system tracks and monitors temperatures of refrigerated containers moving in Royal Arctic liners.

Royal Arctic officials say the new system is doing just what they expected it would – helping improve customer service significantly while preserving shrimp quality during travel from Greenland’s smallest settlements to major ports.
General Manager, John Rasmussen said, “Royal Arctic Line A/S selected the REFCON and Global Monitoring system for ports and vessels because this combination offers a unique way to rationalize, enhance and centralize the monitoring of reefer cargo, enabling us to act immediately on any irregularity. To Royal Arctic Line, protecting the cargo is imperative and due to the adverse weather conditions
in the Arctic we must combine skill, reliability, experience and dedication with the newest information technology to constantly enhance the quality of the service provided to our customers.”
